The School Committees believe, in accordance with the principles stated in the US Constitution, that religious belief and disbelief are matters of personal consideration and that the public schools should be neutral in matters of religion, neither opposing nor promoting religion. The Committee also believes that such neutrality does not mean silence about religion since religion has an important place in history, culture and the arts. The public schools should help students to become knowledgeable about and respectful of the variety of beliefs that are held in a pluralistic society. Staff must be sensitive to the differing religious beliefs of their students when school programs and activities that include matters about religion are planned and implemented. The Superintendent will develop administrative guidelines and procedures for the implementation of this policy.
